Dr. rer. soc. Aukje van Loon

Information

Since December 2023, Dr. rer. soc. Aukje van Loon is postdoctoral researcher (Habilitandin) at the chair for Multilevel Governance in Europe at the Otto-von-Guericke-University Magdeburg. Parallel she is a member of the research division 'Reactivation and Transition' of the Research Center for Post-Mining at the TH Georg Agricola in Bochum. Before joining the European Studies team at Otto-von-Guericke-University Magdeburg, Aukje van Loon was research associate and lecturer at the chair of International Politics at the Ruhr University Bochum (RUB), as well as academic coordinator and deputy internationalisation officer of the RUB's Faculty of Social Science. As a member of this faculty, she has taught various courses and supervised numerous graduate and postgraduate theses in the broad field of European Studies and International Politics. She was a member of the Global Young Faculty of the Stiftung Mercator and visiting scholar of the ACTORE Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence, University of Antwerp. Before completing her PhD, she gained a M.A. in European Economy and Culture (ECUE) from the RUB, as well as a B.A. in Communication with Modern Languages (German/French) from the Robert Gordon University, Scotland.

Her research pays attention to aspects such as democratic citizenship, political contestation and governments' responsiveness and analyzes the variance of EU governments' positions during the process of national preference formation in the field of European Political Economy and EU Economic Governance, particularly in the Common Commercial Policy (CCP), Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) and Energy Policy. In a comparative fashion while affected during times of crises, domestic actors' preferences are examined in shaping their respective governments' positions, thereby facilitating and constraining development and content of contemporary EU decision making. Research questions comprise amongst others studies concerning (1); EU trade and investment negotiations such as the CAI and TTIP, (2); post-crisis reform efforts such as Banking Union and Next Generation EU, as well as, (3); energy transition issues within the European Green Deal framework. Aukje van Loon is a regular participant as (co-)chair and paper-giver at national and international professional organizations (DVPW, ECPR, EISA, UACES) and has published journal articles and book chapters at various publishing outlets.
