The MDR management has plans to cut back on investigative research and regional background reporting. The consequences for opinion-forming are criticized if these cuts are made.

An open letter has been published against this, which has been signed by supporters from all over Germany, including Prof. Eva Heidbreder from Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg.

"We fear for the journalistic clout of MDR, for the fulfillment of our public service mandate and not least for the trust of our audience. We therefore call on you to withdraw the planned cuts. Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia need more rather than less investigative, regional political reporting."
