Applied Teaching
The Master European Studies gives students opportunities to engage with practitioners and thus develop their knowledge in a more practical way. Visiting political institutions and dicsussing with politicians have been part of fieldtrips.
Berlin Fieldtrip
On the 24th and 25th June 2024 European Studies students took part in a field trip to Berlin. They visited holocaust memorials and gained information about the city and culture through a personal tour guide. The trip was financially supported by Landeszentrale für politische Bildung which was also the first stop for everyone. Manuel Knapp gave an input about backgrounds of the European election, results and patterns from the analysis. Students not only had the possibility to discuss and exchange their perspective on the European Union but also talk about the influence of social media on voting behaviour.
The Bundesrat was the next intitution visited by the students.
Monday afternoon the participants werde welcomed in the State Represantation of Saxony-Anhalt by the Secretary of State Simone Goßner. She gave an insight on her work and invited everyone to a strategic talk.
On Tuesday the students visited the Representation of the European Commission with a following talk in the "European House", where political questions from the participants were critically answered.
Brussels Fieldtrip
As part of the Applied Policy Analysis module of the Master Programme of EUs, students take part in a study trip to the heart of the EU: Brussels. This year’s excursion took place in the beginning of March and offered students the possibility of meeting practitioners and experts from the Union’s central policymaking institutions, amongst other influential actors.
The aim of the excursion is to provide students direct contact with practitioners and experts, who can provide valuable and exceptional insights on the EU’s multilevel policymaking processes, by tapping into their experiences and acquired expertise, which brilliantly complements the theoretical knowledge that the students assemble throughout their studies. By conversing with practitioners in Brussels, as in other instances throughout their studies, students are encouraged to seek the bridging of theoretical and applied knowledge.

WDR Europaforum
Students thus had yet another opportunity to engage in dialogue with practitioners and experts, reflecting on the current challenges of global proportions that Europe is facing, while at the same time the EU is affected by the consequences and issues arising from Russia's war in Ukraine.
For 25 years, the WDR Europaforum, an international conference of European politicians and journalists, has been an important discussion forum for all those interested in European politics. This year's conference once again brought together speakers from politics, the media and academic circles to discuss the future of Europe and reflect on possible and necessary adjustments to the European strategy.
